The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), more commonly known as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, was signed on January 29, 2000, following the CBD adopted in Rio in 1992 It is the first international environmental agreement on GMOs and their risks. Entered into force on September 11, 2003, it has to date (October 17, 2017) received 171 member countries of ratifications.

In Gabon it has been in force since July 31, 2007 after Gabon acceded to it on May 2 of the same year.
